The Faculties.

"Intelligence" is at least six different things wearing one coat — intellect, IQ, EQ, knowing, wisdom, intuition. This essay takes the coat off, prices each faculty against the AI era, and adds the axis Eastern thought refuses to omit: 入世 / 出世, the engaged life and the transcendent view.

six words, one coat what gets cheap: raw intellect what stays priceless: wisdom 入世 / 出世

The word of the age is intelligence — and like most words of the age, it is doing too much work. In it live at least six different human faculties, and the AI era is re-pricing each of them at a different rate. This essay is a companion to the journal that ended with the coda; where that one walked from intent to civilization, this one walks inward: what do we actually mean by intellect, IQ, EQ, knowing, wisdom and intuition — and what do 入世 and 出世, the two fundamental postures of a life, ask of the person who holds all six? A lens, not a doctrine; no claims about measuring human worth, and no claims about machines having inner lives. The question is narrower and more useful: what should you rent, what should you train, what should you earn, and when should you step outside?

TL;DR — the argument in six findings

  • Fact"Intelligence" is six faculties wearing one coat. Raw cognitive power (智力), measured IQ (智商), emotional intelligence (情商), the discipline of knowing (认识), wisdom (智慧), and intuition (直觉). The era prices them differently; treating them as one number is the first mistake.
  • FactRaw intellect is now rentable. Value-tier inference runs at ~$0.14–$0.27 per million tokens, a recorded session at $0.0036; capability became a utility. What is not rentable is the method that points it — the ledger's finding, unchanged.
  • InferenceIQ, as a differentiator, devalues. It measured learning speed in an era when learning was the bottleneck. As a diagnostic it remains useful; as a résumé it is being copied into the infrastructure.
  • InferenceEQ and knowing rise. Trust cannot be simulated into existence — it needs stake, time and relationship; and when plausible answers are free, the discipline of knowing (provenance, evidence, the verdict) becomes core engineering, not philosophy.
  • ThesisWisdom and intuition are not capabilities; they are biographies. Judgment matured by consequence and taste compressed from the field cannot be prompted, because they are made of time and stakes. That is why the verdict never leaves human hands.
  • ThesisThe mature life alternates 入世 and 出世. Engagement without transcendence burns out; transcendence without engagement evaporates. The era multiplies attempts — and therefore multiplies the need for both.

Six things wearing one coat

A language with finer nouns makes finer distinctions. Chinese helps here — and so does the older vocabulary of every tradition.

English says "intelligence" for the ability to solve puzzles, the score on a test, the skill of reading a room, the act of knowing, the depth of judgment, and the flash of insight — all at once. Chinese separates some of it: 智能 (the constructed capability), 智力 (raw intellectual power), 智 (cleverness), 慧 (insight). That distinction between 智 and 慧 is the most useful gift this essay inherited: 智 is the ability to win an argument; 慧 is the ability to see which argument is worth winning.

Fact · on the constructs

IQ and EQ are contested psychometric and popular constructs; this essay uses them as cultural shorthand for two different things people mean by "smart", not as validated measures of persons. The engineering claims below are the site's tested ones; the faculty distinctions are a lens — useful if it generates better questions, not if it flatters a hierarchy.

FacultyWhat it isWhere it is made
智力 · intellectRaw problem-solving powerRentable — now partly infrastructure
智商 · IQMeasured speed and pattern abilityDiagnostic — a proxy devalued as a differentiator
情商 · EQReading and holding people, including oneselfRelationship — earned in trust over time
认识 · knowingDeciding what counts as knowledgeDiscipline — the practice of evidence
智慧 · wisdomJudgment matured by consequence and valuesA life — cannot be prompted
直觉 · intuitionTaste; compressed field experienceThe field — earned, not installed

The rentable faculty

The first faculty in history to become a utility.

For all of human history, raw intellectual power was the bottleneck: the person who could calculate, translate, reason quickly, hold many patterns at once, held an advantage no institution could easily buy. That bottleneck is gone. A recorded agent session cost $0.0036; value-tier inference runs at fractions of a cent per thousand words; the ledger measured the model market turning over every three to four weeks. Capability is now a utility you rent — metered, replaceable, improving.

The correct emotional response to this is not fear and not contempt; it is accounting. If capability is rentable, then the compounding asset is not capability. It is what the ledger already concluded: the method — the contracts, the constraints, the loops — and the judgment that points them. The people who lose the most in this era are not the least intelligent; they are the ones whose whole identity was being the smartest person in the room, when rooms now come with an outlet.

Inference · rent, don't hoard

Hoarding a rentable faculty is like hoarding ice. Use it, meter it, keep the invoices — but do not build a self-image on it. The first practical move of the AI era is emotional as much as financial: stop pricing yourself at the utility rate.

The measurement trap

IQ was a proxy for learnability in an age when learning was scarce. Proxies devalue when the thing they proxy becomes free.

An IQ test does not measure wisdom, taste or character; it measures speed, working memory and pattern fluency — and it did so usefully for a century because those were the gates to everything else. When learning itself could be rented, the proxy lost its monopoly. The honest reading: as a diagnostic (where does this person need support?) IQ-like measures remain informative; as a differentiator (why should this person be in the room?) they are being copied into the infrastructure and priced accordingly.

A real scorecard from this journal's author: 149 in physics, 148 in chemistry, full marks in the essay, 128 in Chinese, 87 in math — five numbers, five faculties, never one value. The low one is not a verdict on the mind; it is a coordinate: this person's world is the laboratory and the sentence, not the abstract symbol.

There is a deeper point the era exposes: the test was never the thing. It was always a shortcut for a question nobody could measure directly — can this person be trusted with hard problems? The era doesn't answer that question; it removes the shortcut and forces the real question. Which is good news for people who were never fast, and bad news for people who were only fast.

The un-fakeable faculty

A machine can simulate empathy. It cannot have a stake. Trust is built from stakes.

EQ is usually described as a skill set — self-awareness, regulation, empathy, social grace. That description undersells it. What EQ actually produces is trust, and trust is not a performance; it is a ledger of kept promises accumulated over time. A model can produce warm, accurate, emotionally appropriate language — and it will still be exactly what it is: language. The difference is not the output; it is whether anyone has something to lose. A maintainer who answers a user at 11 p.m., apologizes for a regression, and ships the fix has a stake. The apology costs something. That cost is what makes it real.

So the era's verdict on EQ is the mirror image of its verdict on intellect: as raw capability becomes rentable, the relationship layer becomes the scarcest thing in any system — and the only one that cannot be bought at the utility counter. The Solo Loop already located it precisely: the instruments can absorb the friction, but the relationship with users — the apology, the thanks, the roadmap — stays in the human column. That column is not sentimentality. It is the part of the system that holds trust.

The discipline of knowing

Generating an answer is not knowing one. In this era, epistemology becomes engineering.

认识 — knowing — is the oldest philosophical problem and the newest practical one. When plausible text is free, the scarce faculty is the ability to distinguish I generated this from I know this. The whole evidence apparatus described across this journal is, at bottom, a 认识 machine: claims carry provenance and limits; a maturity state never promotes itself; product evidence and process evidence are two ledgers that never vouch for each other; and the field always gets the last word. None of that is bureaucracy. It is the engineering form of an ancient discipline: know what you actually know, and know how you know it.

The coda named the outside — the reply that does not negotiate. 认识 is the faculty that respects the outside: it insists on receipt rather than invention, on evidence rather than agreement. A person with high 智力 and low 认识 is fast and wrong, confidently; a person with moderate 智力 and high 认识 is slow and right, and in the long run that is the better account. The era does not punish the former immediately. It just lets them ship convincing nonsense, which the field eventually marks.

Author's thesis · knowing is a practice, not a talent

认识 is trainable in the only way that matters: by repeatedly predicting, testing against the outside, and writing down what happened. That is why the practice journal is an epistemology in engineering clothing — every version row, every answer card, every honest need more information is a small exercise of the faculty.

智 knows how; 慧 knows whether

Wisdom is not more knowledge. It is knowledge with consequence, values and time folded in.

Wisdom is the most abused word in the technology vocabulary, so let it be defined narrowly and practically: wisdom is judgment that has been paid for — by consequences survived, values kept, and time that cannot be compressed. It shows up as knowing what not to build; knowing when a project is done; knowing which battle does not matter; knowing what it will cost someone else; knowing when to stop even though you could continue. 智 wins the argument; 慧 chooses which argument deserves the win — and often declines both.

This is why the era's cheapest capability does not threaten wisdom; it exposes the difference. A model can hold more facts, generate more options, argue more sides than any person alive — and it cannot be wiser, because wisdom is not the option set. It is the cost function. It is the values that decide what the options are for, revised slowly by living with the outcomes. The umbrella page puts this in engineering language: the verdict on whether the evidence is sufficient stays with the named human. That verdict is 慧. It cannot be delegated because it is not a capability; it is an accountability.

Inference · wisdom is a biography

You cannot prompt wisdom for the same reason you cannot prompt a scar. It is made of things that happened to a specific person, at a specific cost, over a specific life. This is also its consolation: it is the one advantage that cannot be bought, printed, or rented — only lived.

Taste is compressed field work

Fluency is not taste. Taste is what chooses the problem.

Intuition has a bad reputation in engineering — soft, unverifiable, suspicious. That reputation confuses two different things: raw guess and expert pattern recognition. The second is compressed experience: thousands of hours in a domain, compressed into a fast signal that says "this abstraction is wrong", "this number smells", "this user is describing a different problem than the one we solved". It is not magic; it is a compression algorithm trained on the field. And it is precisely what machines cannot be given, because a model's fluency is trained on text about fields, not on the consequences of its own bets in one.

Taste — the aesthetic face of intuition — is the faculty that decides which problem is worth solving, which solution is elegant, which claim is too convenient. This is where the era's productivity multiplies instead of commoditizing: ten thousand possible attempts cost nothing, and choosing among them is the work. The person with taste and a rented intellect will outbuild the person with a rented intellect alone, every time. And taste is earned the same way intuition is: by shipping, observing, and being contradicted in the field — which is exactly what the support loop does for a solo maintainer, in public.

The two postures

Engagement without transcendence burns out. Transcendence without engagement evaporates.

The six faculties are capacities. 入世 and 出世 are postures — the answer to a different question: not what can I do, but how will I stand toward the doing. 入世 is the engaged life: build in the world, take responsibility, answer users, accept consequences, enter the arena where the field gets to answer. The whole practice journal is an 入世 document: attempts, releases, support, the apology at 11 p.m. 出世 is the transcendent view: the ability to step outside the loop — to see one's own project as one project among many, to hold outcomes lightly, to stop, to rest, to let the verdict of the world be the world's rather than one's identity.

Neither posture survives alone. Pure 入世 becomes the thing it builds: the maintainer who answers every message, achieves everything, and burns out with the inbox as their only biography. Pure 出世 becomes commentary: the observer who criticizes attempts without ever making one, whose transcendence is purchased by never entering. The mature life alternates, and the alternation is not a mood — it is a practice with a cadence: engage, be answered, withdraw to see, return and apply. The coda's outside — the reply that does not negotiate — is 出世 made concrete: the place from which you can watch your own plan meet reality without needing it to win.

Author's thesis · the alternation is the skill

In an era of cheap attempts, the failure modes are equally available: endless 入世 (attempt at everything, finish nothing, own nothing) and endless 出世 (comment on everything, risk nothing, become invisible). The skill is not choosing one posture forever — it is knowing when to enter the arena and when to walk up the mountain. God laughs at the plan; the person on the mountain can hear the joke without needing to win it, and the person in the arena is the only one who learns from it.

The era's verdict, faculty by faculty

What to rent, what to train, what to earn, and when to step outside.

FacultyThe era's verdictWhat you do
智力 · raw intellectRentable; becoming infrastructureRent it; don't identify with it
智商 · measured IQDevalued as a differentiatorUse as a diagnostic; stop using as a proxy
情商 · EQScarcer; trust cannot be simulatedTrain it; keep the promises that cost you
认识 · knowingMandatory; plausibility is freePractice provenance, evidence, the honest "I don't know yet"
智慧 · wisdomIrreplaceable; not promptableEarn it — consequences, values, time
直觉 · intuition / tasteThe differentiatorEarn it in the field; let it choose the problem
入世 / 出世The life-shape questionAlternate: engage, withdraw, return

There is a single thread through the table. Everything the era makes cheap lives in the head — pattern, speed, fluency, generation. Everything it leaves precious lives in the life — what you have paid for, what you have promised, what you have learned from being contradicted, what you can see from outside your own project. The machine can mirror every faculty; it can be responsible for none of them. That is not a limitation to overcome. It is the line that makes the whole arrangement worth having.

The sentence

Rent the intellect. Measure the IQ only to help. Train the EQ by keeping costly promises. Practice 认识 until honesty about evidence is a habit. Earn 智慧 where it is only earned — by paying. Sharpen 直觉 in the field. And alternate 入世 and 出世 until both are a rhythm and neither is a refuge. The machine can hold up the mirror. It cannot take the responsibility for what the mirror shows.
